After a few weather delays, we finally had clear skies this past Sunday evening for one of our favorite Teach Kentucky traditions, our annual NuLu Scavenger Hunt!
Each year, we host this lighthearted competition to help our newest cohort of teachers get to know each other, explore their new city, and dive into some local history and culture. NuLu, known for its colorful murals, independent shops, and foodie hotspots, offers the perfect backdrop for a little friendly competition.
Teams were given a series of clever riddles and clues designed to guide them through the neighborhood, discovering art installations, historic landmarks, and small local businesses along the way. Some of the clues were tricky, but that didn’t stop our groups from putting their heads together and getting creative. We encouraged teams to send us photos of their adventures, awarding bonus points for originality and enthusiasm.
One of the most memorable moments of the night came from our winning group, Team GRACE (Gavin, Robert, Andriana, Caroline, and Eliza), who solved this riddle:
This bird wears jewels and holds its throne,
A mural made of spice and tone.
Crowned in color, bold and grand —
Find the royal fowl that rules this land!
The answer? The vibrant mural outside Royal’s Hot Chicken. Not only did they find it, but they also submitted a video of themselves performing the chicken dance right on Market Street. That kind of spirit sealed the win!
Their prize? A celebratory dinner at The Village Anchor during our Dine to Donate fundraiser on Saturday, July 27. It’s a perfect blend of fun and purpose — a delicious night out that also supports Teach Kentucky’s mission of recruiting passionate new teachers for Louisville’s public schools.

And the fun didn’t stop when the scavenger hunt ended. Afterwards, several teams teamed up again — this time facing off in a friendly trivia night at West Sixth NuLu, joined by a few of our veteran TKY teachers. It was the perfect way to wind down, enjoy good company, and keep the competitive energy going.
At its heart, this event is about more than solving riddles or winning dinner. It’s about building community, creating memories, and helping our new teachers feel right at home in Louisville. We’re so proud of this cohort already — and we can’t wait to see what else they’ll do this year.
