Teach Kentucky, while sponsored by local alumni of the member institutions, is joined in alliance with several critical strategic partners: The University of Louisville’s College of Education and Human Development, Jefferson County Public Schools, Shelby County Public Schools, Spencer County Public Schools, and Henry County Public Schools. Each Partner brings extensive benefits to the alliance and the details are discussed below.
University of Louisville-College or Education and Human Development
The University of Louisville’s College of Education and Human Development provides participants eligibility for in-state tuition status to enroll in its well regarded Master’s in the Art of Teaching (MAT) program. This is an alternative route to state certification while teaching fulltime. The two-year curriculum gives Teach Kentucky participants the opportunity to put current theory into their daily practice and, upon graduation, additional financial earnings ability. Additionally, our participants are able to take advantage of the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP), a state-sponsored program for new teachers that University of Louisville faculty members supervise. . Participants receive six hours of their 30 required credit hours for completing KTIP.
The value of the College of Education and Human Development’s partnership is significant. The tuition arrangement saves a participant up to $6,500 in their first year tuition cost as participants pay the in-state tuition fees. The Teach Kentucky program couldn’t exist without this generous contribution. Further, the declaration of this in-state status allows qualified candidates to apply for additional financial aid support from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) for special tuition grants and loans. Finally, the College of Education’s successful grant solicitations provide the resources for extensive faculty mentoring.

Jefferson County Public Schools
Jefferson County Public Schools serves the students in the Greater Louisville, Kentucky area. It is one of the larger districts in the nation (in the top 25) and has an enrollment of 96,000 students. The District serves a diverse, urban population that reflects the demographics of the entire county.
Teach Kentucky is designed to help fill teaching positions in the District’s critical hiring needs areas. The emphasis is placed on teaching in middle school or math, sciences and foreign languages at the high school level. Jefferson County provides teachers in these areas with a grant of the second year’s tuition to the College of Education and Human Development’s MAT program. This generous grant of approximately $4,000 is one of the most attractive benefits of the Teach Kentucky program. Completion of the MAT and achieving Kentucky certification will increase participants pay by roughly $4,000 annually.
Jefferson County provides other support to new teachers. The District extends an in-school mentoring program with experienced teachers. The new teachers are also included in the District’s competitive employee benefits package. Finally, the District recognizes the out-of-pocket costs of applying for a teaching position and reimburses candidates for successful completion of the Praxis exam and provides expenses for recruiting trips to Louisville.

Shelby County Public Schools serves a very different student population. A relatively small semi-rural school district, Shelby County is immediately east of Jefferson County and the Greater Louisville and is an easy commute. Shelby County has a student population of roughly 5,000 countywide, but is growing rapidly as Louisville grows eastward.
Shelby County offers comparable salary and benefits of Jefferson County, but the opportunity to work in a significantly different type of school setting.
Located just 30-40 minutes east of Louisville, Henry County Public Schools is a quaint district, serving approximately 2,500 students. In addition to the offering positions in the critical hiring needs area, Henry County also offers hiring opportunities in the non-critical hiring areas of language arts, social studies and foreign language.
There are four public schools in Spencer County.
- Spencer County High School , located at 520 Taylorsville Road, has an estimated 38 teachers and 800 students. The school building was built in 1982-83. The current principal is Tracy Bale.
- Spencer County Middle School, located at 1263 Mount Washington Road right behind Spencer County Elementary School, has an estimated 45 teachers and 620 students. The school building was built in 2004-05. The current principal is Ed Downs.
- Spencer County Elementary School, located at 1265 Mount Washington Road, has an estimated 52 teachers and 790 students. The school building was built in 1999-2000. The current principal is Karen Larimore.
- Taylorsville Elementary School, located at 206 Reasor Avenue, has an estimated 25 teachers and 490 students. The school building is the oldest in the district, having been since 1938. The current principal is Chuck Abell.
Until the early 2000s, there were only two public schools in the district, the elementary school (educating grades K-6) and the high school (educating grades 7-12). In 2000, a new elementary school was built, and the district split into a three-school system. Due to the fast growth of the county, a new middle school was built in 2004-05, and a second elementary school took residence in what had been the middle school.
