SETH HUNTER
Our nation’s politico-economic discourse is shot through with the need for education reform. If only our system could improve, they say, then many of our problems would be solved; they have been saying this for some time. Teachers feel that policymakers have no idea what occurs in the classroom. On the other hand, policymakers cannot understand why teachers are unable to produce real results. I will be teaching for two underlying reasons: I have had a rigorous, quality education that will allow me to really understand the material and assure student understanding, and, I want to personally know what is going on “in the trenches” of the American education system that makes progress so difficult.
While in the classroom, I hope to plant seeds of curiosity in the minds of students. Whether those seeds end up taking the form of mathematical, musical, marketing, or writing interests is irrelevant, I just want students to enjoy learning. By teaching, I also wish to understand what constitutes an effective public education.
TeachKentucky’s strongest asset is its ability to seamlessly place you into the heart of Louisville’s society. Whether this means a Sunday evening serenade by a local bluegrass group at the Willow Park community gathering, helping fix breakfast for local parents at the Ronald MacDonald Home for chronically ill children, having luncheons with local businesspeople in order to share TeachKentucky’s purpose, or hopping into a van and taking a scenic tour of Kentucky’s backroads with your fellow teachers. TeachKentucky does its best to make you feel at home, because this is where we want you to be.
